Wharf Resources (USA), Inc. was granted a Large Scale Mine Permit on Friday, November 18, 2011. This permit will allow Wharf Resources to expand their mining operations to the south of their current operation to obtain gold-bearing ore. This expansion will likely extend their mining operations for another 7 years. The expansion will require the relocation of the upper 1 mile of SD473 – otherwise known as the Terry Peak Road – between US14A and Terry Peak.

Several public meetings have been held outlining the mining permitting process and each meeting has made mention of the highway relocation. However, the most recent public meeting held at the Golden Hills Resort in Lead on Tuesday, December 20 provided details of the highway relocation, such as vertical and horizontal alignment, typical sections, structures, traffic impacts, right-of-way issues, and construction schedule.

The $4-5 million project is entirely funded by Wharf Resources (USA), Inc. and work is scheduled to begin in 2013. All design criteria and construction procedures and materials will be in accordance with South Dakota Department of Transportation road design standards and standard specifications. The Department of Transportation will also have construction oversight on the project.

Questions may be directed to Ken Nelson at Wharf Resources at 605-584-4177.
