Reconstruction of S.D. 473

Lead, S.D. – Wharf Resources (USA), Inc. was granted a Large Scale Mine Permit on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. This permit will allow Wharf Resources to expand their mining operations to obtain gold-bearing ore in a location south of their current operation. This expansion will likely extend their mining operations for another 7 years.

The expansion will require the relocation of the upper 1 mile of S.D. 473, otherwise known as the Terry Peak Road, between U.S. 14A and Terry Peak.

Several public meetings have been held outlining the mining permitting process. At each meeting, the highway relocation was mentioned. However, the most recent public meeting held at the Golden Hills Resort in Lead on Tuesday, December 20 provided details of the highway relocation, such as vertical and horizontal alignment, typical sections, structures, traffic impacts, right-of-way issues, and construction schedule.

The $4 million to $5 million project is entirely funded by Wharf Resources (USA), Inc. Work is scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2012. All design criteria and construction procedures and materials will be in accordance with South Dakota Department of Transportation road design standards and standard specifications. The Department of Transportation will also have construction oversight on the project.

Project information can be found on the DOT website at: http://www.sddot.com/pe/projdev/planning_pubmeet_wharf.asp.
