TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION APPROVES ENHANCEMENT GRANTS

PIERRE, S.D. - Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist announces that the South Dakota Transportation Commission has approved adding $980,000 for FY2012 and $610,000 in FY2013 in enhancement projects to the five-year Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

Transportation Enhancement (TE) activities are federally funded, community-based projects that enhance the transportation system through preservation of visual and cultural resources and that improve the quality of life for South Dakota citizens. TE projects must have a link to the transportation system and be one of 12 eligible activities.

“The Department of Transportation receives a pool of funds specifically dedicated to Transportation Enhancement as created under the federal transportation bill,” Bergquist said. “These projects enhance the transportation experience by improving the cultural, historic, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of the local transportation system.”

Transportation Enhancement funds may be used only for qualified projects and may not be used as general highway funds.

TE projects approved by the Transportation Commission on Jan. 26 include:

  • A shared-use path along Interstate 90 in Oacoma – FY2013, $275,000

  • A shared-use path in the Henze Addition to the Flynn Nature Trail near Milbank – FY2013, $60,000

  • A railroad depot restoration along U.S. Highway 83 in Ft. Pierre – FY2012 - $500,000

  • A streetscape along Main Street in Hill City – FY2013, $275,000

  • A living snow fence – statewide – FY2012, $300,000

  • Relocating a historic bridge located near Geddes to a bike path near Lake Mitchell – FY2012, $180,000.
