Highway Ditch Closure Proposed near Lennox

PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation is proposing to close a portion of the ditch to off-road vehicles along South Dakota Highway 44 near Lennox.

The segment is the south ditch from Interstate 29 going west to the north junction of Highway 44, mile marker 407.3 to mile marker 411.6 (MRM 407.3 to MRM 411.6).

Off-road vehicles have damaged vegetation and caused erosion in that section of the ditch.

The proposed closure was initiated by local request and has the concurrence of the state Department of Transportation.

Ditch closures do not apply to snowmobiles, off-road vehicles used in normal agricultural operations, and utility company service vehicles in the line-of-duty.

The Transportation Commission will consider the proposed ditch closure at its May 24 meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. CDT in Room 200 of the Becker Hanson Building, 700 East Broadway, Pierre.

Persons interested in presenting data, opinions, and arguments for or against the proposed rules may do so by appearing in person at the hearing or by sending comments to: South Dakota Department of Transportation, Operations Support, 700 East Broadway, Pierre, SD 57501.
