Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects in the Mitchell and Sioux Falls Areas 

 

MITCHELL, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal and followup fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell and Sioux Falls areas. The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order: 

 

  1. S.D. Highway 1804, eight miles, from 282nd Street north to Highway 44. The chip seal will begin on Monday, June 18, and take about two days to complete.  The followup fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  2. S.D. Highway 50, 24 miles, from Highway 44 south and east to Lake Andes.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is five days.  The fog seal will take about another three days to complete.

  3. S.D. Highway 1804, four miles, from north of 295th Street north to Highway 50.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day.  The fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  4. S.D. Highway 50, point two (0.2) miles, from just south of the Highway 18/281 junction north to the Highway 18/281 junction. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is one day.  The followup fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  5. U.S. Highway 18, 25 miles, from Highway 50 north and east to Highway 37 at Tripp.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is five days. The fog seal will take about another three days to complete.

  6. U.S. Highway 281, five miles, from the Highway 18 junction north to Armour.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  7. S.D. Highway 44, 18 miles, from the Highway 281 junction east to the Highway 37 junction at Parkston.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is four days. The fog seal will take about three days to complete.

  8. S.D. Highway 224, eight miles, from Alpena east to Highway 37.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is two days. The fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  9. Interstate 90, three miles, overhead roads at mile markers 321.43, 323.42, 328.41, 338.42, 347.04 and 351.06.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is one day. The followup fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  10. S.D. Highway 38, eight miles, from Riverside Road to just east of Alexandria Road.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is two days. The fog seal will take about one more day to complete.

  11. S.D. Highway 13, six miles, from 223rd Street north to Highway 324.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is one day. The fog seal will take about one more day to complete. 

 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the projects with the use of flaggers and a pilot car.  A delay of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through work areas during daytime hours. 

 

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 48 hours after each day’s chip seal application.  Traffic should travel at 40 miles per hour during that time.  

 

The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip seal projects. 

 

Bituminous Paving, Inc. of Ortonville, Minnesota, is the prime contractor for the $3.5 million in projects.
