U.S.12 Construction through Ipswich

IPSWICH, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin the third and fourth phases of the U.S. Highway 12 reconstruction project through Ipswich on Wed., July 21.

Currently, construction is in progress on the southernmost lanes of Highway 12 through Ipswich, with traffic diverted to the northernmost lanes and reduced to one lane in each direction.

The third phase of the project is located at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 45.  During that phase of construction, Highway 45 traffic will be detoured on signed detour routes in Ipswich.

The fourth phase of the project will be in the center portion of Highway 12 east of the intersection of Highway 45. Traffic control will be adjusted to both sides of the roadway with one lane of traffic remaining on the old surface and one lane of traffic on the newly completed surface.

The work involves removing the existing surfacing, grading, and concrete paving. Motorists may encounter loose gravel and delays and should slow down while driving through the construction zone.

Highway 12 traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction through Ipswich with a 10-foot width restriction.

During operations that impact traffic, flaggers may be present on the project to allow construction equipment to cross traffic; minor delays should be expected.

The contractor on the project is Upper Plains Contracting, Inc.
