Aberdeen Area Asphalt Surface Treatments

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin asphalt surface treatment projects on Wednesday, July 25, on routes in northeastern South Dakota.

The following highways will have an asphalt surface treatment applied to the full roadway surface in this order:

  • S.D. Highway 20 – from Brentford  to the state Highway 45 junction
  • U.S. Highway 281 – northbound lanes from Mellette to Warner
  • U.S. Highway 12 – the 1.75 mile grade raise just east of Roscoe
  • S.D. Highway 10 – from U.S. Highway 281 east to just west of Houghton
  • S.D. Highway 27 – from U.S. Highway 12 north to just south of Langford
  • U.S. Highway 12 – across Rush Lake

The following route will have only the asphalt shoulders surfaced with the asphalt treatment:

  • U.S. Highway 12 – from the Interstate 29 junction west to Groton on the westbound and joined five-lane sections only.

Traffic will be controlled with pilot cars and flaggers on all two-way traffic routes.

Lane closures and flaggers will be used on all divided and five-lane highway sections.

Motorists may encounter loose rock, fresh oil and construction equipment and may want to consider alternate routes during and immediately following completion of the asphalt treatment project.

The contractor will move from one project to the next, and the work is expected to be completed in three to four weeks.

The prime contractor for the $3.6 million project is Bituminous Paving Inc.
