Asphalt Work Begins In Mellette, Todd, Tripp, and Lyman Counties

WINNER, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation has begun the first phase of chip-seal work on several state highway segments in Mellette, Todd, Tripp, and Lyman Counties.

Routes being worked on include:

  • U.S. Highway 83 from the junction with Highway 18 north to White River
  • U.S. 83 from the Highway 18 junction south three miles
  • S.D. Highway 53 from Clearfield to the junction of Highway 18
  • S.D. 47 from the junction of Highway 49 to the junction with I-90

The chip sealing started on Highway 83 at White River on Tuesday (July 31) and will be followed by Highway 53, and then Highway 47. Weather permitting, the work will be done by Aug. 17.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in work areas, and motorists can expect short delays. Flaggers and pilot cars will guide drivers through the work zones.

Loose gravel and fresh oil may be present for several days after applying a seal coat, so motorists – especially motorcyclists -- may want to consider alternate routes.

The prime contractor for the project is The Road Guy Construction Company Inc. at Yankton.
