Mount Rushmore Road Reconstruction

Schedule Change

RAPID CITY S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says scheduling for the Mount Rushmore Road reconstruction project in Rapid City has changed. The roadway reconstruction will now be completed with three separate projects instead of two.

Project 1 – Tower Road to Flormann Street in 2014

Project 2 – Flormann Street to St. James Street in 2015

Project 3 – St. James Street to Kansas City Street in 2016

The change was approved by the South Dakota Transportation Commission after constructability reviews revealed that constructing the one-point-nine miles of roadway between Tower Road and Kansas City Street could not be completed in two years.

The shorter length projects will be completed in three consecutive construction years to better facilitate utility relocations and roadway reconstruction.

The total cost of all three road construction projects is estimated at $13.2 Million.

The city of Rapid City will replace utilities in conjunction with the roadway reconstruction at an estimated cost of $8 million.
