Highway 89 Closed For Tree Removal

CUSTER, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising motorists that Highway 89 in Custer County will remain closed from three miles north of the junction with U.S. Highway 16A to the junction of Highway 87 at Sylvan Lake until Saturday, March 23, for continued removal of mountain pine beetle infested trees.

That segment of highway has been closed since March 11 for tree removal in Custer State Park.

The extended closure is needed so tree-clearing crews can remove high-hazard trees adjacent to Highway 89 outside of Custer State Park.

Access to the Sylvan Lake Area is still available via Highway 16/385 and Highway 87.
