Highway 16 Construction South of Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. – According to the South Dakota Department of Transportation, crews will begin work on an 11-mile resurfacing project on Highway 16 between Neck Yoke Road near Spring Creek and the Keystone Wye south of Rapid City on Monday, April 15.

Work on the $7.7 million project includes milling and replacement of existing surfacing, median improvements, pipe work, and guardrail replacement in both directions on Highway 16.

Traffic will be restricted to 1 lane each direction with a 16-foot width restriction.

A tentative construction schedule is as follows:

  • End of April to end of May – Median Improvements
  • Mid-May to end of August  – Milling existing surfacing and asphalt resurfacing
  • Intermittent work includes guardrail improvements, curb and gutter, signing, and painting

The contractor plans to produce asphalt from a temporary asphalt plant between Reptile Gardens and Bear Country just outside Rapid City. A lane closure will be established for the safe entry of trucks onto the highway.

Motorists are also asked to watch for slow moving traffic, merging lanes, construction equipment and workers throughout the project limits. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph during working hours, and motorists are reminded that fines are double in work zones.

Construction will be suspended from July 27 through August 11 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Bituminous Paving, Inc. of Ortonville, MN is the contractor and the completion date is early-October.
