Chip Seal Projects In Custer and Fall River Counties

CUSTER, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation will begin an asphalt chip seal project on Monday, Aug. 19 that will impact traffic through Custer State Park and other highways in Custer and Fall River counties.

The highways receiving a chip seal application are as follows:

  1. Highway 16A from the West Park Gate to the intersection with Highway 36
  2. Highway 36 from the intersection with Highway 16A to Highway 79
  3. Highway 18 eastbound from the Cheyenne River Bridge south of Maverick Junction to Smithwick Road
  4. Highway 18P and Highway 471 through Edgemont
  5. Highway 40 through Hermosa

Traffic will be stopped and guided through the projects using flaggers and a pilot car, with the exception of the Highway 18 eastbound project which will be reduced to one lane of traffic. Traffic should expect delays on all routes.

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 48 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should travel at the posted speed limit or 40 miles per hour, whichever is less, during that time.

The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip seal projects.

The prime contractor on this $767,951 project is Hardrives Construction, Inc. of Billings, Montana.

The overall completion date is Sept. 20.
