Highway Ditch Closures Approved Near Yankton and Chancellor

YANKTON, S.D. - At a public hearing today in Pierre, the South Dakota Transportation Commission approved a proposal to close two segments of ditches near Yankton on Highways 50 and 52 and one segment on Highway 44 near Chancellor to off-road vehicles.

The areas that are being placed off-limits are:

  • Highway 50 from Ferdig Avenue to Belair Road, from near mile marker 385 to near mile marker 388 in the north ditch.

  • Highway 52 from Highway 153 to West City Limits Road, from near mile marker 338 to near mile marker 342 in both the north and south ditches.

  • Both eastbound and westbound ditches of Highway 44 from Highway 17 to 461st Avenue in the town of Chancellor (mile marker 400.77 to mile marker 406.32)

Closure of these ditch segments is effective immediately and signing will be placed accordingly.

Off-road vehicles have damaged vegetation and caused ditch erosion in those locations. The closures were initiated by a local request and have the concurrence of the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

Ditch closures do not apply to snowmobiles, off-road vehicles used in normal agricultural operations and service vehicles in the line of duty for utility companies.
