Highway 16 Construction Near Jewel Cave Begins

CUSTER, S.D. – Work has begun on a four-mile project on Highway 16 near Jewel Cave in Custer.

The project includes curve realignments, culvert installation and resurfacing with asphalt concrete.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane during working hours. Flaggers and pilot cars will guide traffic through the construction zone. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected.

An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect throughout the project.

Motorists are asked to watch for falling rock and debris while traveling on Highway 16 in the construction zone as steep slopes, coupled with loose material and construction vibrations, create conditions favorable for such hazards.

The asphalt surface is expected to be in place by the interim completion date of Oct. 1, 2014. The final lift of asphalt will be placed in 2015 before the overall completion date of July 24, 2015.

The prime contractor on the $8.4 million project is Zandstra Construction, Inc. of Rapid City.
