BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says Phase 1 of the construction project on 6th Street in Brookings has begun and includes removal and reconstruction of the westbound lanes from 20th Avenue to 34th Avenue.

During this work, it will be necessary to close the north legs of intersections intermittently during the removal and surfacing processes from Sunrise Ridge Road to the east.

The first closure will be the 34th Avenue intersection on Wednesday, April 5, for two to three weeks while the contractor installs a new sewer manhole, water lines and storm sewer and surfacing of the area. Advanced warning signs for the closure will be in place to allow traffic to take an alternate route during these closures.

The public is invited to attend weekly meetings to discuss progress and sequencing.

Meetings will be held every Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Department of Transportation building located at 2131 34th Ave. in Brookings.

Interim completion for the project is Nov. 3, 2017, which includes Phase 0-2.  Overall field completion date is June 30, 2018, which includes Phase 3.

The prime contractor on this $16.5 million project is BX Civil & Construction of Dell Rapids.
