VERMILLION, SD  – South Dakota Department of Transportation officials say Highway 50 east of Interstate 29 to the intersection of Highways 50 and 11 will be closed to through traffic on April 10, 2017.

Contractor crews will be replacing several bridges and culverts on Highway 50 from the intersection of Union County Highway 1C east to the Highway 11 intersection. The work involves, removal of the existing structures, installing new box and pipe culverts, spot regrading, erosion control work and interim roadway surfacing.

Traffic will be detoured on Interstate 29; through Elk Point via the I-29 Business Loop at Exit 15; Union County Highway 9; Union County Highway 1B; and Highway 11. All cross roads and access to residences within the closure area will be maintained at all times.

Upon placement of the interim asphalt resurfacing, the roadway will be reopened to through traffic.

Culvert work is expected to be completed by July 15.

The contractor will also be completing an asphalt pavement overlay in the eastbound lanes only of Highway 50 from Vermillion to Interstate 29 and from Union County Highway 1C to the intersection of Highway 11 after the culvert replacement work is completed.

Commercial Asphalt of Mitchell is the prime contractor on the $3.8 million project.

All work is expected to be completed by Sept. 1.
