For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 27, 2017 Contact: Matt “Rip” Rippentrop, 605-673-4948 PINE RIDGE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says work on eight miles of Highway 18 from nine miles east of Pine Ridge at the intersection of BIA Highway 27 (Wounded Knee Corner) to 17 miles east of Pine Ridge to the intersection of Highway 391 (Gordon Junction) will begin Monday, May 8. During this second phase of the project, the contractor will be widening the existing shoulders, flattening slopes, maintaining temporary road diversions to install new box culverts, upgrade the drainage cross pipe culverts and asphalt surfacing. During daylight hours, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the work zone and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Traffic will be restored to normal flow at the end of each day and during night time hours. Motorists can expect delays up to 15 minutes, suddenly slowing and stopped traffic, construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lane and are encouraged to use an alternate route. Phase two work is expected to be complete by Nov. 4, 2017. The prime contractor for the $22.2 million dollar project is Loiseau Construction, Inc. from Flandreau.
