BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Belle Fourche area starting Monday, July 24.

The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order:

  • Highway 34 – 20 miles, from mile marker 96 to 116
  • Highway 73 - 28 miles, from mile marker 146 to 174
  • Highway 85 – 43 miles, from mile marker 112 to 155
  • Highway 168 – seven miles, from mile marker 25 to 32
  • Highway 79 – seven miles, from mile marker 144 to 151

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. A delay up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area.

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should travel at 40 mph or the posted speed limit if it is less than 40 mph, during this time frame.

Motorists are asked to slow down in work zones and be prepared for suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.

The overall completion date for the project is Oct. 6.

The prime contractor for the $3.8 million dollar project is Simon Contractors of SD dba Hills Materials Co. from Rapid City.
