LEMMON, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation has scheduled the Highway 73 and Highway 12 shoulder widening project for the Nov. 1, 2017 bid letting.

This 21-mile safety project was delayed several months due to challenges finding a suitable wetland mitigation site. Recently, a landowner worked with the department to provide a suitable wetland mitigation site helping the project move forward to be constructed in 2018.

The Highway 12 part of the project from the North Dakota state line to Lemmon, 10.5 miles, will include widening the roadway to provide six-foot asphalt shoulders, pipe culvert treatments, reinforced concrete box culverts and roadway lighting approaching Lemmon. It also includes ADA curb ramp upgrades and roadway lighting from 7th Avenue through 3rd Avenue in Lemmon.

The Highway 73 part of the project includes widening the roadway to provide six-foot gravel shoulders, pipe culvert treatments and reinforced concrete box culverts from the junction of Highway 12 to just north of the Grand River (Dewitt Road), 10.5 miles. The shoulders on this part of the project will be scheduled for asphalt surfacing on a future 2018 project.
