PIERRE, S.D. – Officials are opening Interstate 90 between Rapid City and Wall to local traffic only at 6 a.m. MDT (7 a.m. CDT).

I-90 remains closed from Wall to Sioux Falls and I-29 remains closed from the North Dakota border to Sioux Falls.

Travel east of Wall remains extremely difficult to impossible on both the interstate and other state and local highways. DOT crews and state troopers are reporting heavy drifting, stuck vehicles, snow-packed and icy roads and zero visibility. Winter maintenance is still suspended in many areas due to visibility.

Officials strongly encourage anyone who has plans to travel east of Wall to stay where you are as there are very limited accommodations east of Rapid City.

At this time, there are no immediate plans to open Interstate 90 east of Wall and motorists are asked to not anticipate an opening and park at the gates on the interstate.

The storm system has slowed down significantly and is lingering over the central and eastern parts of the state. Blizzard conditions are still expected in the southeastern part of the state.

Motorists are asked to stay put today and not travel if at all possible.

Closures and advisories are posted on www.safetravelusa.com/sd and on the phone based 5-1-1.

“We understand people want to be on the roads and about their business, but we ask for patience while the storm continues to move through the state and our maintenance crews can get the roads clear and safe for travel,’’ said Greg Fuller, director of Operations.
