Highway 18 Reconstruction to Begin

HURLEY, S.D. – South Dakota Department of Transportation officials say the reconstruction of Highway 18 between highways 81 and 19 in the southeast part of the state will begin on April 24, 2018.


Contractors will be reconstructing the roadway and drainage structures. Work involves grading the embankment, replacing pipe culverts, reconstructing box culverts and a bridge, placement of an interim surface and permanent roadway signing.


The road will be closed and traffic detoured. Drivers wanting to continue on Highway 18 or north on I-29 will be detoured on highways 81 and 44. Traffic travelling south on I-29 will be detoured on highways 81 and 46. Access to adjacent property will be maintained during the project.  


A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, from 6-7 p.m. CDT at the Viborg Community Center to discuss the 2018-2019 construction schedule and sequencing for this project. Both DOT and contractor personnel will be in attendance to answer questions


Bowes Construction, Inc. of Brookings is the prime contractor on this $17.48 million project.


The contractor will work through late November as weather permits and the roadway will then be opened to traffic until work resumes in the Spring of 2019. The overall completion date is June 28, 2019.
