CUSTER, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says centerline rumble stripes will be applied to three highways in the Rapid City region of the state beginning Friday, May 11, and may include work taking place on Saturdays.

The contractor will move from one project site to the next in the following order:

  • Highway 44 – Four miles, from Hisega going east to Dark Canyon Road. Work will begin on Friday, May 11, and take about two to three days to complete.
  • Highway 44 – Four miles, from the Highway 44/ 385 intersection going east to Johnson Siding. Work will begin on Friday, May 11, and take about two to three days to complete.
  • Highway 18 – 13 miles, from Oglala going east to Pine Ridge. Work will begin on Monday, May 14, and take about one to two days to complete.
  • Highway 407 – Two miles, from Pine Ridge going south to White Clay. Work will begin on Tuesday, May 15, and take about one to two days to complete.
  • Highway 18 – 15 miles, from Pine Ridge going east to Gordon Junction at the Highway 18/391. Work will begin on Tuesday, May 15, and take about two to three days to complete.

The centerline rumble stripes will be milled into the highway’s centerline. Millings will be swept off the highway, fresh oil placed on centerline and once the oil has dried, temporary paint or tabs will be placed on centerline. Within seven days, the contractor plans to place permanent paint striping on the highway’s centerline.

Traffic will be stopped temporarily and reduced to one lane to be guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. A delay of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

Motorists are asked to slow down and be aware of suddenly slowing and merging traffic as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lane.

The prime contractor on this $330,000 project is Surface Preparation Technologies, LLC of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
