STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says asphalt paving operations on Highway 34 from the Belle Fourche River bridge west to the Highway 34/79 junction will begin on Tuesday, May 8.

The contractor has been milling the surface on this route for the past two weeks and is now ready to move on to the paving operation.

Traffic will be controlled with a pilot car and flaggers during daytime working hours.

Work on this project includes cold milling, asphalt concrete resurfacing, guardrail upgrades, centerline rumble stripes and pavement markings. The contractor expects paving to be complete by June 1, 2018.

Motorists are asked to be aware of suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.

The prime contractor on this $3.1 million project is Border States Paving, Inc. of Fargo, North Dakota.
