Air transportation is vital to South Dakota's economy. SDDOT's Air, Rail, and Transit program provides planning and engineering expertise to communities interested in improving or building airports. The aeronautics program also administers the Airport Improvement Program, which is a federal grant program, and inspects each general aviation airport every year. This office also handles aircraft registrations and permits for tall structures.
South Dakota currently has 71 public use airports:
- 6 - Commercial Service
- 6 - Large General Aviation
- 17 - Medium General Aviation
- 26 - Small General Aviation
